Maurice Morning Wills (October 2, 1932 — September 19, 2022) was an American former professional baseball player and manager. He played in Major League Baseball (MLB) primarily for the Los Angeles Dodgers from 1959 through 1966 and the latter part of 1969 through 1972 as a shortstop and switch-hitter; he played for the Pittsburgh Pirates in 1967 and 1968, and the Montreal Expos the first part of 1969. Wills was an essential component of the Dodgers’ championship teams in the mid-1960s, and is credited for reviving the stolen base as part of baseball strategy

Queen Elizabeth II : 1926-2022

Queen Elizabeth II – was Queen of the United Kingdom and other Commonwealth realms from 6 February 1952 until her death in 2022. She was queen regnant of 32 sovereign states during her lifetime and 15 at the time of her death. Her reign of 70 years and 214 days is the longest of any British monarch, the longest recorded of any female head of state in history, and the second-longest verified reign of any sovereign in history

Being of Scots-Irish heritage I have always viewed the Monarchy with respect. With no disrespect, I always think of the Beatles when I hear her name:

Her Majesty is a pretty nice girl
But she doesn’t have a lot to say
Her Majesty is a pretty nice girl
But she changes from day to day

I wanna tell her that I love her a lot
But I gotta get a belly full of wine
Her Majesty is a pretty nice girl
Someday I’m gonna make her mine, oh yeah
Someday I’m gonna make her mine

After the 2004 game the Jackals allowed kids to run the bases. When the boys reached home plate they would reach down and grab some dirt. The dirt would be rubbed into a baseball related first day cover to commemorate the event and to bring home some “game-used” dirt.

The hand-drawn cachet features the stadium layout, the red dot indicates our seats.
The cover is signed by Chris Rowan, Jackals infielder. Rowan would also play for the Ogden Raptors of the Pioneer League, Stockton Ports and Mudville Nine of the California League, and North Shore Spirit of the Canadian-american Association

The Jackals announced that 2022 would be their last season playing at Yogi Berra Stadium, so I made one last visit to see them play. Not sure where they will relocate to, they may stay in New Jersey, who knows

Junior Detective

My son had picked up this plastic badge several years ago at a public event in Somerset County, NJ. Recently my wife and I went to a local area free outdoor concert in Union County. There were displays present by the Prosecutors Office, Bomb Squad (excellent display of bombs) and other official offices. I picked up the Junior Detective badge and pinned it to my dog’s harness

We don’t take enough advantage of the local programs offered, I need to do it more. This night we brought some sandwiches (hoagies, subs, heroes – depending on where you live) lawn chairs and our dog for a night of Pink Floyd music under the stars (and some rain) It was a nice night out

Marvin the Martian

Marvin the Martian, was created by Chuck Jones and first appeared as an antagonist in the 1948 Bugs Bunny cartoon Haredevil Hare. He went on to appear in four more cartoons produced between 1952 and 1963.

“ I think man is the most interesting insect on Earth. Don’t you? There is a growing tendency to think of man as a rational thinking being, which is absurd.”

“I’m just about to solve the Earth’s fuel problem. I’m going to blow it up!”

Turtle Back Zoo – West Orange, NJ

A very nice small zoo, a great family day out

Situated on 20 acres in the South Mountain Reservation, it is part of the South Mountain Recreation Complex, which is managed as part of the Essex County Park System, the oldest county park system in the United States. Founded in 1963, the zoo was originally a showcase for animals indigenous to the New York metropolitan area, but currently features species from every continent except Antarctica. As of 2018, it houses approximately 1400 animals, including several hundred birds in a free-flight aviary (a favorite of mine)

The Turtle Back Zoo has been an accredited member of the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA) since 2006. In 2017, the zoo became an accredited member of ZAA (Zoological Association of America)

Doctor Who Fan Club of America

1978 – When Doctor Who, the long running British television show, came to the New York area by way of PBS (channel 13) I became a fan immediately.

Without the availability of internet access, we relied on magazines to provide information about the show. Joining the Fan Club of America sounded like the thing to do. I don’t remember much about the perks, most likely a newsletter, ability to make purchases not found elsewhere and of course a fantastic enameled membership pin

I taught my boys about Doctor Who and we all still watch, although somewhat irregularly
